Our Lord calls down a blessing on those who are merciful, those who are full of compassion towards others. They feel the suffering of others whether from sin or sorrow and desire to lessen it. They shall reap a rich reward both now and in the resurrection. Is that you?
Our Lord calls down a blessing on those who are pure in heart, those who aim at inward and outward holiness, who strive to keep a clean conscience and serve God sincerely. They shall enjoy the deepest communion with God. Is that you?
Our Lord Jesus calls down a blessing on those who are peacemakers, those who use their influence to promote peace and charity on earth, in private and public, at home and abroad. They begin, of course, with spreading the Gospel that makes for peace between God and man. They shall receive a high title and inheritance as children of God. Is that you?
Lastly, our Lord calls down a blessing on those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, those who are laughed at, mocked, despised, and ill-used because they endeavor to live as true Christians. They receive the same treatment that their Master received here in the world. Because they now confess Him before others, He will confess them before His Father and the angels on the last day. Is that you?
These beatitudes are the eight characteristics that our Lord seeks in the character of His disciples. They are, of course, the exact opposite of the characteristics found in those who are successful in this world. But those who have these characteristics will outlast the world and receive eternal praise and honor.
