Those whom Jesus chose to be His disciples were mostly life’s poorest and humblest. Christ is not just for the rich and learned, but for all kinds of people. There are no worldly attainments that commend one to be His disciple—all without grace are as nothing in His sight.
Biblical Christianity must be from heaven, or it could not have survived because it does not flatter those of social standing of this world nor allow for the carnal inclinations of the heart. The first disciples did not have any worldly status to commend them and could not, by themselves, turn the world upside down. But God could and He did!
Our Lord’s miracles reveal His mission as one of mercy, kindness, and power, confirming His Kingship. Thus, He healed the sick with His touch, and cast out devils with His word. He completely saves all who come to God by Him. He is Lord of heaven come to earth.
Our Lord is the Great Physician in both the physical and spiritual realms. He cured the obviously physical afflictions that tormented the body and the hidden spiritual pains caused by sin that tormented the wounded conscience. Jesus, by His sacrifice on the cross, and the Holy Spirit can heal us if only we are humble enough to go to Him.
Our Lord has a very compassionate heart and never rejects anyone who comes to Him in simple, trusting faith. No worldly standing can commend you, no sinful condition can prohibit you from receiving His compassionate, curing power, but you must come in an honesty that admits your condition, in a humility that admits your need, in an earnestness that desires to be cured, and a simply, trusting faith in Him alone to save. He had an ear to hear, a hand to help, and a heart to care. There is no kindness like His. His compassions fail not.
