Even at the age of 12, Jesus teaches us a godly example. For four days after leaving Jerusalem, He was separated from His parents. For three days they anxiously searched for Him. They finally found Him in the Temple of God, sitting amid the Jewish teachers, hearing them teach and asking questions.
We wish the same could be said of today’s Christian youth. May they be found to be interested in the things of the Lord ever with without their parents present. May they seek to be among the godly and wise and to use every opportunity to learn of the Lord, and His ways, and His promises, and His demands.
Youth, and we who are older, need to remember if we are old enough to be wrong, we are also old enough to do right, and that if we can read and talk, we are able to read our Bibles and pray. Let all of us remember that we are accountable to God even while young.
All of us have an example to imitate in the answer our Lord gave to His mother’s question. A mild reproof may well have been in His response. He reminded His mother that He was no ordinary person and had come into the world to do no ordinary work. He solemnly re-minded her that, as God, He had a Father in heaven and that His heavenly Father’s work must be His first priority.
Can the same be said of us? Are we about our Father’s business? Let this be the target at which we aim in our daily lives, as well as the test by which we examine our daily behavior and conversation. Let His answer to His mother inform and inspire us when we begin to be slothful and correct us when we are inclined to go back into the ways of the world.
