Christ Overcomes Human Greatness

Luke 2:13-25
Suggested further reading: Psalm 146

Sadly, the rich and powerful of this world often perceives Christ as irrelevant to be safely ignored, or as an annoyance to be tolerated, and, for some, even a threat to removed. Here we see that no sooner than Christ is born, Herod seeks to kill Him. All forms of human power, like position and wealth, though sought by many, they are a temptation to all. Therefore, Christians should be content with meeting their basic needs and not envy the rich and famous. Concentrating on developing Godly character is more important that developing a portfolio.

The work of Christ in the world today does not depend on the patronage of the powerful. It never has, nor will. Learn the truth of Psalm 146:3. While there may be an exception here and there, those who are like Herod are many.

Death removes the mighty of this world—their position, power, and wealth cannot keep them alive. Here we see that the murderer of helpless infants dies. But praise God, Joseph and Mary return to their own land in safety when the wicked Herod is dead. Herod’s story ends in his death, but Christ’s story continues even today.

Christians should never be greatly moved by the persecution of the worldly powerful. Our enemies may possess the means to hurt us verbally, financially, and physically, but we need not be afraid. We will be living long after all human pomp and power has been destroyed. Life is not a case where the one who dies with the most toys wins. But those who believe in Him who overcame death will live forever.
