The Bible Church of the Lakes supports firefighter crews
From KXAN report (July 18, 2018):
HORSESHOE BAY, Texas (KXAN) — A church is openings its doors to dozens of exhausted firefighters that have been battling a large wildfire for more than 24 hours.
The Bible Church of the Lakes in Horseshoe Bay has snacks and water available to crews fighting the fire, which is burning within close proximity to the building. Neighbors dropped off other donations for the first responders throughout the day Wednesday.
David Pope, a church deacon, said the fire that started Tuesday evening truly worried him.
“I’d never seen a fire like that before,” Pope said. “I was concerned that it could move across [Highway] 71, and, if it did, I didn’t know where it would stop.”
Fortunately, the fire never made it that far north. Dozens of water drops from a helicopter helped douse some of the flames that flared up along hillsides. Stephanie Ellis, who lives two miles north of the area where the fire is burning, evacuated on her own Tuesday night.Water and snacks available for firefighters at Bible Church of the Lakes in Horseshoe Bay. “The smell of smoke was choking and ash falling all over the place,” Ellis said, “so I took my animals, packed up a suitcase and went to a friend’s.”
She and church members are now watching the direction of the fire closely. The church will remain open to provide relief for firefighters until the fire is contained.
7/19/18 UPDATE:
All is quiet this morning—no smoke, no vehicles in church parking lot and no ash floating down. This morning’s report was for 45% containment with comment as to good progress expected if winds stay calm.
