Matthew 4:1-11

Since Satan successfully tempted Adam to sin, he was not timid to assault the second Adam, our Lord Jesus. He knew who Jesus was. He had, no doubt, witnessed Jesus’ baptism and saw the dove descending, and heard the approving voice of the Father identify Him as His Son. He knew that Jesus had come into the world to destroy his works and establish His own kingdom on earth. The Savior-King had finally come to set those who are captive to Satan free. Satan knows deep down that he cannot win this struggle, but he refuses to go down without a fight and to take as many as he can with him. If he cannot stop God’s kingdom from being established, he wants there to be fewer citizens in it than otherwise.
We must not be surprised if the devil tempts us, but do not be preoccupied with him either. If we are kingdom bound, he sees an invisible “bull’s eye” on us. As he tempted our Lord, he will tempt us, perhaps with greater hopes of success. His method of attack varies with the person and situation. Sometimes he will tempt us to believe his lies. Other times he may apply pressure to make us avoid pain. He may offer the promise of success if we only compromise our values. Money, sex, and power are also tools that he uses. On Job, he used suffering. On David, he used sex. On Peter, he used the desire for self-preservation. If he cannot rob us of heaven, he will at any rate make our journey to it as painful as possible. If he cannot destroy your soul, he will at least bruise your heel. Do not take him lightly but put on the whole armor of God! Remember this, he never sleeps and has lots of experience. So let us all watch and pray daily against his various tricks.
