Note the deep thankfulness in Zechariah’s words about the Messiah’s appearing! Praise is the first word that falls from his mouth as soon as his speech is restored.
It is hard to imagine the excitement he experienced for he was seeing with his own eyes the fulfillment of the oldest promise in the Old Testament—the promise of the coming of the Savior. For him, faith had become sight—and he was excited.
Zechariah praises God for His promises and speaks of them as if they had already happened—he is so sure of their fulfillment.
Believers, whether in the Old or New Testament, feed much on God’s promises and are obliged to walk by faith. Zechariah did not know about the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus as we do. But with his limited knowledge, he looked forward to redemption based only on the promises in God’s Word. Such faith should be imitated!
Let us rest on God’s promises and embrace them as Zechariah did. Let us believe that every promise God made about His people, about their future, will surely be fulfilled in the future as every promise He made has been fulfilled in the past. Our safety is secured by His pro-mise. Nothing shall prevail against any of His promises to us. Our acquittal is secured by His promise, as is also our final glory. Let us be fully persuaded of God’s promises. Let us embrace them and not let them go. They will never fail us. God’s Word is never broken. He is not a man that He should lie. We have a seal on every promise that Zechariah never saw. We have the seal of Christ’s blood to assure us that what God has promised God will perform.
