If You Are Too Busy to Pray, You Are Too Busy

Our Lord’s private prayer life is fully worthy of our imitation. Our passage does not record a one-time event. Perhaps one reason why He did not faint under the load He carried for us is because He prayed and prayed often. And if the perfect Son of God thought He needed to pray, what about you and me? Even as the Second Member of the Holy Godhead, He used prayer as a means of grace and did not neglect it.

His prayer life is a crucial lesson for all who desire to grow in grace and walk closely with the Father. Like Him, we must make time for private meditation and for being alone with God. It is not enough just to read the Scriptures daily, or attend worship services regularly, or observe the Lord’s Supper—all of which are means not to be slighted. Like married couples who need time to be alone with each other, so believers need time to be alone with the Lord. He is worthy of special seasons for solitary self-examination and meditation. If you are too busy to pray, you are too busy.

Sadly, there are many professing believers who take no time to pray, thinking themselves self-sufficient and God as superfluous. But committed disciples are praying disciples. Those who love to honor Him take time to pray.

If you wish your walk with the Master to be richer, if you want your life to reflect His character, if you want those blessings that God gives only to those who pray, what should you be doing? If you like meeting with those who love you dearly, may I recommend prayer for no one loves you like the Lord does whom you meet in prayer!
