Immanuel

Matthew 1:18-25
Suggested further reading: John 1:1-5, 14-18

Jesus’ title of “Immanuel” reflects His nature as God manifest in the flesh. We must be clear about His nature and person and believe firmly that our Savior is, at the same time, both perfect man and
perfect God. Weak views on this foundational truth lead into heresy! As Immanuel, God is both with us and like us, except without our sin.

The Bible clearly affirms our Savior’s humanity. He was weary, hungry, and thirsty, and wept and groan in pain, just like us. He is fully human. This humanity was added to His Deity when He was born of the virgin, Mary. Jesus is fully human.

Yet, He is also God. Our Savior read men’s thoughts, and exercised power over devils, and worked the mightiest miracles with a spoken word. Angels served Him. He allowed a disciple to call Him “my God”, and He claimed a unique oneness with God (John 8:58; John 10:30). He is the eternal God. Jesus is fully God.

If you want to have a sure and solid foundation for your faith and hope, then you must keep your Savior’s Deity in constant view. He, in whose blood you are taught to trust, is the Almighty God. All power is His in heaven and on earth. None can pluck you out of His hand. If you are a believer in this God-Man, Jesus, then do not let the pain and foolishness of this world confuse you or cause you to be afraid.

If you want to have solid comfort in your suffering and trials, then also keep in constant view you Savior’s humanity. He knows your heart thoroughly. He is fully sympathetic towards your weaknesses, temptations, and pain. Trust Him always to be with you. He will not despise you. He sympathizes with His children who put their faith in Him.
