Mark 1:27-34

In times of trouble, our first response should naturally be to turn to Jesus for help. We know, as did those in our reading for today, that there is no remedy like Him.
Naturally, we should use any appropriate means with diligence. We should consult with doctors, lawyers, and wise & godly friends as our case may be, for God often uses other means to help us. But the Christian’s first and proper response is always to cry to Jesus for help for He is both compassionate and capable.
In the Gospels we see Jesus’ almighty power heal both physically and spiritually. He rebukes a fever or lays his hands on the sick and they are healed. He rebukes demons and they depart from those they have possessed. In each case the transformation is remarkable.
But His miracles occur so frequently that we often read them as if they were commonplace and never stop to think of the truths these miracles teach. Familiarity breeds ignorance! Each miracle teaches us of Christ’s compassion and the almighty power of His kingship. Nothing physical or spiritual, immaterial, or personal (like Satan) can ultimately stop Him who is the Healer of our souls.
And Jesus heals completely and immediately. Not only did the fever leave Peter’s mother-in-law, but then she served them. As a general rule, even after a fever has stopped, we may be weak for some time. But not so here. The fevered woman was both immediately and completely healed. Her cure enabled her to serve Jesus! This shows the greatness of our King.
Let us use His healing of our sin-sick souls be a testimony to His compassion and greatness, and an opportunity to serve Him.
