Our Lord came into the world for many reasons, and one was to be a preacher and teacher of the Word of God. He came in His office as Priest by which He offered Himself as a sacrifice of our sins. He came in His office as King and offered the Kingdom to His people who, rejecting Him, must await His Second Coming for Him to reign over the earth. But He also came as a Prophet and as such He proclaimed the Word of God. He walked on earth to preach the good news of salvation for sinners, healing news for the broken-hearted, enlightenment to those who sat in ignorant darkness.

Because of this, there is an honor on all those, ordained and non-ordained, who share the good news! Until it was time to offer Himself as a sacrifice for our sins, Jesus might have spent His time instituting and maintain ceremonies, like Aaron, or spent His time as King, ruling and reigning like David. Instead, Jesus spent His time preaching.

In some circles, preaching has been questioned as being of any value. Some of this is caused by our society in which feelings are more valued than truth. Thus, music in worship (which is very important) is often more highly valued that preaching the Word. But, considering Jesus’ ministry, there should be no question that preaching is extremely important. It is through preaching that the church was founded, and by sound Biblical preaching that sinners are saved and the saved are built up.

God’s only Son was a preacher, and the world is still responding to His preaching. Let us share in the ministry of Jesus by sharing His Gospel to those around us. Preaching is important.
