Judgment Day: Rewards and Retribution

Luke 3:15-20
Suggested further reading: 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10

There will be a solemn separation on Judgment Day. The unerring justice of the King of kings will divide the wheat from the chaff – an eternal separation.

This is no trivial doctrine! It makes our repentance a matter of life and death, a matter of heaven and hell, eternal life and eternal punishment. We must never forget this. Yes, God is love and merciful, but He is also just and holy. Life is serious because in it eternal destinies are determined. Let us keep this ever in our consciousness.

John the Baptist also spoke about the believer’s security. This is much needed good news as every believer finds times when he needs much encouragement. Believers must struggle against the lusts of their own flesh and in the Devil’s world. They need to be reminded that Jesus will never leave them nor forsake them, that He will guide them safely through this life, and finally to eternal glory. They are hidden in that day of wrath as Noah was, safe in the ark, i.e., Jesus.

Further, it is important to remember that God’s servants are often not rewarded in this world. As John was imprisoned and beheaded by Herod, so all true servants of Christ must patiently wait for their honors. Their best things are yet to come! While waiting for their future rewards, it is to be expected that they meet with hard treatment in this world. The world that persecuted Christ will never hesitate to persecute Christians.

Here is our comfort, that our Lord has laid up in heaven for His people such things beyond every believer’s ability to understand. When all who have suffered for God’s truth are at last gathered together, they will find it true that heaven makes amends for all.
