In the conduct of Elizabeth’s friends and relatives, we have an example of the kindness we owe to one another (Luke 1:58). Though it seems a small gesture, showing joy in others’ joy and sorrow in their sorrow is an act of Christian humility and sympathy as well as an act of true friendship (Romans 12:15). Our Lord, as always, is our model: he rejoiced at a wedding and wept at a grave (John 2:1-11; 11:1-46). Never underestimate the power of true kindness and sympathy.
Also, notice how Zachariah was blessed by his affliction! He resists the wishes of others and gives the child the name commanded by the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:62-63). He had disbelieved what Gabriel told him and has suffered for it. Now, he believes and obeys every word that the angel spoke to him. Evaluated affliction can teach us wisdom.
Let us learn from Zachariah. We cannot escape trouble and pain in a sin-laden world (Job 5:7). But in our pain let us pray that God may give us wisdom so that we do not harden our hearts against Him. Any pain that humbles us and drives us nearer to God is a blessing. No one is more hopeless than he who, in time of affliction, turns his back upon God (2 Chronicles 28:22).
God’s blessing was on John the Baptist (Luke 1:66). His blessing is what we should pray for our children. It is the best blessing ever to be given and one that can never be lost. It is good for children to have the blessing of good education, great opportunities, and pleasant circumstances, but it is better for them to have the matchless blessing of the Lord. If we would have the Lord bless our children, we must diligently seek Him for it.
