Psalm 14 – The Foolishness and Corruption of Atheism

Apr 6, 2025 | Pastor's Blog, Psalms

Timeless Biblical Truth.

Believers may live where the godless ignore God’s law and oppress His people but God will judge the godless and deliver His people.

  1. Those who deny God’s existence and His moral laws follow their own perverse and corrupting way (14:1-3).
    1. Cause: The foolish denied God’s existence (14:1a).
    2. Effect: The fool’s nature is completely corrupt (14:1b-3).
  2. The fool will persecute the righteous being ignorant of their future terror and shame (14:4-6).
    1. Present: The ignorant fool will persecute the righteous (14:4).
    2. Future: The wicked fool will come to experience great terror and shame (14:5-6).
  3. The righteous believer longs for God’s deliverance (14:7).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. Why would someone say there is no God? See 2 Corinthians 4:3-4. How does God regard such a person? How should we approach such a person? How are they sometimes made aware of God? See Romans 1:19-20.
  2. What is the logical outcome in daily life of this attitude toward God?
  3. What moral standards does God desire for humanity? What does He find?
  4. Define “refuge”. For whom is God a “refuge”?
  5. What does this “no knowledge of God” produce? How has your knowledge of God deepened recently by Scripture and experience?
  6. What is the effect of the unbeliever’s injustice and corruption on others? What is the believer’s hope? Is this hope reflected in your prayer life?
  7. Have you experienced the effects of the unbeliever’s outlook and lifestyle? Do you think such an outlook has or will affect our children and grandchildren?
  8. Based on its content, make your own title for this psalm.
