Psalm 16 – The LORD’S Presence and Protection

Believers in their integrity may seek the LORD’S protection with confidence because His care continues even in life beyond the grave.

  1. Prayer: Believers may petition the LORD for His protection because they trust Him completely (16:1-4).
    1. Believers petition the LORD for protection (16:1).
    2. Believers verbally confess their faith in the LORD (16:2).
    3. Believers declare their faithfulness to the LORD by avoiding evil practices (16:3-4).
  2. Praise: Believers praise the LORD for all that He has given to themto make their lives pleasant (16:5-7).
    1. Believers praise the LORD for providing economic blessings (16:5-6).
    2. Believer praise the LORD for providing moral guidance and instruction (16:7).
  3. Confidence: Believers express their confidence that the LORD’S protective care will endure forever (16:8-11).
    1. Believers confess their faith that the LORD will protect them (16:8-9).
    2. Believers express their confidence that the LORD will never forsake abandon them, not even in death (16:10-11).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. Using 16:1-4, what are the marks of a believer?
  2. Using 16:5-8, what are the privileges of a believer?
  3. Using 16:8-11, what is his future (8-11)? Does the phrase I shall not be shaken in verse 8 reflect a false bravado or sure confidence?
  4. Trace the changes in David’s mood throughout this psalm? Does prayer and the promises of God change your mood? Do your prayers move from worry to worship?
  5. What does this psalm teach you about God? About David? About yourself? How does trusting God like this affect you?
  6. Peter uses this Psalm in Acts 2 to give Scriptural support for something. What is it?
