Psalm 21 – Victory In the LORD’S Anointed

Timeless Biblical Truth.

Those who put their trust in the LORD will rejoice when God gives them the victory over the world (both now in individual conflicts and in the future in the final victory).

  1. The Past: Every time the LORD exercises His power it demands the believer’s praise (1-7).
    1. Praise given: The LORD is to be praised for His great acts of deliverance (1).
    2. Examples given: The LORD delivers and blesses His people who pray to Him (2-6).
    3. Timeless Truth: The LORD shows His loyal love to those who trust in Him (7).
  2. The Future: The LORD’S faithfulness in the past assures the believer of His ultimate victory for His people (8-12).
    1. Statement: The LORD will destroy the wicked (8-10).
    2. Reason: The LORD will destroy the wicked because they intend to destroy the righteous (11-12).
  3. Vow to Praise: Believers will praise the LORD for His mighty power (13).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. Psalm 21 has two important sections (verses 1-7 and 8-12) with a concluding vow (verse 13). In what ways are these first two sections alike? In what ways are these two sections different?
  2. How does verse 13 relate to verse 1? Does your experience of the LORD’s blessing and protection in the past increase your praise to Him in prayer and to trust Him? Give examples.
  3. In what ways does what is said of David (the king of Israel) find its fulfillment in Jesus Christ?
  4. What kind of situation do you think prompted this psalm?
  5. Note the words that reveal the LORD’S relationship with His people and their king. Are those words describing a positive or negative relationship?
  6. How has the LORD blessed the king? Do you have a list (mental or written) of His blessings to you? Are praise and thanksgiving a prominent part of your prayers?
  7. How does God deal with His enemies?
  8. Give your own short title to this psalm.
