Psalm 25 – Seeking Mercy from the LORD

Believers can pray for deliverance, guidance, and forgiveness as they live a godly life in a hostile world.

  1. In times of crisis, believers may pray to the LORD for His deliverance, guidance, and forgiveness (1-7).
    1. Believers may pray to be delivered from their enemies (1-3).
    2. Believers may pray for the LORD’S guidance in His truth (4-5).
    3. Believers may pray for forgiveness from God because of His faithfulness and compassion (6-7).
  2. Believers may continue to pray with confidence in the LORD’S deliverance, guidance and forgiveness (8-22).
    1. Believers may continue to pray for forgiveness because God will teaches the way to live because He is kind and fair (8-11).
    2. Believers (those who fear the LORD) will receive an inheritance and knowledge of how to live (12-14).
    3. Believers may continually pray for deliverance and protection from their enemies (15-21).
    4. Believers may pray for their complete redemption (22).
“In the prophets, God speaks to man, but in the psalms, man speaks to God.”

Questions for Second Milers

  1. Having read the entire psalm and David’s petitions, what can you infer about his circumstances and spiritual experience? How far can you make these petitions your own?
  2. List the ways in which David shows his dependence on God. How does his dependence relate to God’s guidance?
  3. To what qualities of God’s character does David appeal? How important is it for you to know God’s character or attributes?
  4. What does God do for the humble? For the obedient? Why?
  5. Does David see himself as humble? Is this the basis upon which you ask for forgiveness?
  6. What does verses 11-15 teach us about the one who fears God?
  7. Summarize the thoughts of verses 12-14 and then contrast them with David’s need in verses 16-21.
  8. Which of David’s words are familiar to your experience?
  9. What requests does David make of God in the closing verses? Which of these do you consider most important?
  10. Give your own short title to this psalm.
