Psalm 27 – A Prayer Song of Courageous Trust

Timeless Biblical Truth.

When believers are confronted with false accusations they seek to be in the presence of the LORD who will strengthen their faith to have confidence in His protection and guidance.

  1. Believers who trust the LORD and desire to be in His presence will find confidence to face even life-threatening circumstances (1-6).
    1. The believer’s faith in the LORD’S protection is based on what he has seen the LORD do in the past (1-3).
    2. The believer’s faith in the LORD is strengthened by being in His presence (4-6).
  2. Believers in the LORD wait patiently for Him and pray with assurance that He will protect and guide (7-14).
    1. Believers pray for the LORD’S continued presence (7-10).
    2. Believers pray for the LORD’S guidance when dealing with malicious false witnesses (11-12).
    3. Believers pray with expectation for the LORD’S blessings (13).
    4. Believers who pray are to rely completely of the LORD (14).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. What does this psalm say about fear? What do you fear the most?
  2. In what ways is the Lord your (i) light, (ii) salvation, and (iii) stronghold?
  3. What is the main desire of David’s heart? What do you want more than anything else this year?
  4. In verses 7-14 what are David’s seven petitions? How does he address God, and how does he encourage himself to continue in prayer?
  5. Relate verses 7-10 with verse 4. What is the relationship between verses 11-12 and verses 1-3?
  6. Explain David’s optimism in verse 13. What is the relationship between seeing and believing in the Christian life?
  7. In verse 14, how does David tell us to “wait for the LORD”? What does verse 14 imply about David’s belief in people and God?
  8. Why do you think the LORD makes us wait on Him?
  9. Give your own short title to this psalm.
