Psalm 35 – Hated Without a Cause

Timeless Biblical Truth.

The LORD will destroy the wicked and vindicate His people.

  1. Believers ask the LORD to deal with those who hate them without a just reason (1-10).
    1. Believers appeal to the LORD for Him to defeat the wicked (1-6).
    2. Believers base their appeal on the wicked’s unjustified hatred (7-8).
    3. Believers also make a vow to praise the LORD (9-10).
  2. Believers lament how they are treated and that the LORD has not delivered them (11-18).
    1. They lament that their enemies repay good with evil (11-16).
    2. They lament on their need for the LORD to deliver them (17).
    3. They make a vow to praise the LORD to the congregation (18).
  3. Believers ask the LORD to bring judgment against those who stir up strife against those who live at peace (19-28).
    1. They ask the LORD to stop the wicked from causing strife by their vicious words (19-21).
    2. They ask the LORD to deliver the righteous (22-26).
    3. They promise that they and the people of God will praise the LORD continually (27-28).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. What do you think is David’s tone of voice as he calls on God to help him?
  2. How can David be so confident of his own righteousness (cf. v 24)? Are you as confident as he is? Should you be? Why or why not?
  3. What do you need to do today to bring your life up to David’s standards?
  4. Compare 1 Samuel 24 (a possible situation for this psalm). How does this passage help to explain David’s tone of voice in prayer?
  5. How would you react in similar situations? Why or why not?
  6. In what situations today do you expect God to deliver you and then vow to praise the LORD as in verses 9-10, and 28?
  7. Give your own short title to this psalm.
