Believers who look for the coming of YHWH will not be overly concerned about this world’s inequities but will rejoice in YHWH’S blessings.
- Believers who persevere in faith will enjoy God’s blessings (1-6).
- It is useless to be anxious over the behavior of sinful people for they will soon disappear (1-2).
- Believers trust and obey the LORD since He fulfills their desires (3-6).
- Believers who persevere in faith will be rewarded at the judgment (7-20).
- Believers must trust the LORD and not worry over evildoers (7-8).
- Believers know that evildoers will be judged but they inherit the land (9-11).
- Believers trust YHWH who prevents and punishes the wicked (12-20).
- Believers who persevere will manifest godliness and enjoy God’s protection and provision in this life and the one to come (21-33).
- The LORD provides for the righteous in this life (21-26).
- The LORD preserves the righteous from judgment (27-33).
- Believers who persevere in faith will receive salvation & peace (34-40).
- The LORD will exalt those who wait obediently on Him (34).
- The LORD guarantees the believer’s future blessing, but not for the wicked (35-38).
- The LORD delivers believers who take refuge in Him (39-40).
Questions for Second Milers
- What are the differences that the psalmist makes between the righteous and the wicked?
- What does the psalmist command from his readers (both negative and positive)? What are the results of obedience?
- Which of all these commands do you find to be most relevant to your walk with the Lord?
- What is your attitude toward the prosperity and power of wicked people (anger? envy? indifference?)?
- What security does the righteous have when facing material loss (note the contrast of the plight of the wicked)?
- Why does God destroy the wicked?
- Why does God deliver the righteous?
- How will the certainty of your future, as stated by the psalmist, affect how you live this day?
- Give your own short title to this psalm (this will help you to remember its contents).
