Psalm 38 – The Repentance of One Suffering Divine Discipline

Timeless Biblical Truth.

When believers confess (and forsake) their sin to the Lord they may expect Him to remove His disciplinary actions.

  1. Believers who are suffering divine discipline for their sin may plead with God for relief (1).
  2. Believers must confess that their suffering is due to their sin (2-14).
    1. Believers confess that their suffering is divine discipline for sin (2-4).
    2. Believers understand that the LORD is their only help (5-11).
    3. Believers are mute when their enemies exploit their pain (12-14).
  3. Believers’ confidence in the LORD has sound reasons (15-20).
    1. Believers are confident that the LORD will answer their prayer (15).
    2. Believers have reasons for their confidence (16-20).
      1. God will not let the wicked rejoice over them (16).
      2. God will not let them die in grief (17).
      3. God will receive their confession of sin (18).
      4. God will prevent the wicked from repaying good with evil (19-20).
  4. Believers’ plea for immediate help is based on their covenantal relationship with the LORD (21-22).
    1. The LORD should not forsake them because He is their God (21).
    2. The LORD should hasten to deliver them because He is their salvation (22).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. What are the psalmist’s circumstances (external and internal)?
  2. What causes him anguish (cf. vv 1-2, 4-5, 8)?
  3. Have you experienced sorrow and helplessness? When?
  4. Is there any relationship between your spiritual and physical problems?
  5. To whom does the psalmist look for help (cf. vv.11-12 with 15, 21-22)?
  6. What must psalmist do to make his relief possible?
  7. What should you do today to find relief from the guilt of sin and divine discipline because of it?
  8. Give your own short title to this psalm?
