Psalm 46 – “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”

Timeless Biblical Truth.

God is the only true source of safety and security in times of great disaster and danger; believers do not need to fear because God’s protection and ultimate victory over the world is certain.

  1. In times of crisis believers are at rest knowing the LORD is with him (1-3).
    1. God is our refuge in times of destruction (1).
    2. There is no reason to fear, even if the world is in chaos (2-3).
  2. In times of a political crisis believers are at rest knowing the LORD is with him (4-7).
    1. God provides for the security for believers in times of imminent danger (4).
    2. God’s presence protects believers from all their enemies (5-7).
  3. In view of the final victory of the sovereign LORD over the world, believers may renew their confidence in the LORD’S presence (8-11).
    1. Unbelievers will know that the LORD has the final victory (8-9).
    2. Unbelievers must stop and acknowledge the sovereignty of the LORD who will be exalted everywhere (10-11).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. How does the psalmist describe God? What are his circumstances that calls forth this description?
  2. The psalmist is describing a national crisis. What in our nation makes you fearful? Why? What in your world makes you fearful? Why?
  3. Note the repetition of the refrain in verses 7 and 11. Why does the psalmist repeat this refrain?
  4. Compare the imagery and tone of verses 4-5 with that of verses 6-7 and 9. What variations are there in the ways God acts?
  5. To what extent are you aware that God is with you, that He is your present helper?
  6. How may a person become aware of God’s majesty?
  7. Obey the command of verse 10a for five minutes—not praying but meditating on knowing that God is God. What did you feel after meditating?
  8. What are appropriate responses to knowing that God’s presence is with you?
  9. 9. Give your own short title to this psalm.
Wise Counsel: When you are nervous and fidgety, wanting to interfere with God’s plans for your life, remember these three admonitions: “Be still!” (Ps 46:10); “Stand still!” (Ex 14:13); and “Sit still!” (Ruth 3:18). Trust God to see you through anything.
