Psalm 47 – The King Over All the Earth

Timeless Biblical Truth.

The whole world must acknowledge that the LORD reigns on high because He has put down all His enemies and granted His people their inheritance.

  1. Everyone should praise the LORD joyfully because He has shown His sovereignty over the nations (1-4).
    1. Everyone is to praise the LORD joyfully (1).
    2. Reason: The LORD is to be honored because He is king over all the nations and chosen Israel for His inheritance (2-4).
  2. Everyone should praise their God and king because He is King over all the earth (5-9).
    1. The LORD has ascended His throne with great acclaim (5).
    2. Everyone is to sing praises to His sovereignty (6-7).
    3. The exalted LORD reigns from His holy throne over the nations (8-9).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. List the ways the LORD is shown to be king of all the earth.
  2. What does the psalm reveal about God’s (i) power, (ii) character, and (iii) relationship both to the world and to His people?
  3. How are the people to respond to their LORD?
  4. How do you respond? How should you respond?
  5. Write a list of your blessings (both heavenly and earthly) about which you can shout your joyful praises to God.
  6. Give your own short title to this psalm.
