Psalm 54 – The LORD Is Our Protector

Timeless Biblical Truth.

When believers face a threat from those who attack them because of their faith, they may confidently pray, knowing the LORD’S nature, for His deliverance.

  1. Petition: Believers may pray to the LORD for deliverance from those who threaten them with violence (1-3).
    1. Believers may pray for God to deliver them (1-2).
    2. Reason: Believers pray because they are threatened by violence (3).
  2. Confidence: Believers declare their faith that the LORD is their helper and will deliver them (4-5).
    1. Believers are confident that the LORD is their helper (4).
    2. Believers are confident that the LORD will put an end to the threat (5).
  3. Vow: Believers will praise the LORD when He answers their prayers (6-7).
    1. Believers willing praise the LORD for His nature (6).
    2. Reason: Believers praise the LORD for His anticipated deliverance (7).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. From reading this psalm and the following passages from 1 Samuel, what do you believe is the situation that David faces (cf. 1 Sam 23; 26:1-4)?
  2. How does David feel about his situation? Toward whom and against whom does he express his emotions? Why?
  3. What is the basis for David’s plea for deliverance?
  4. What descriptive names of God does he use? How crucial is God’s character to David and his situation? How important is it to pub- licly and privately declare one’s faith in the LORD?
  5. What does David anticipate will happen? What does he vow to do in response?
  6. What is your feeling about God’s name (i.e., character)? Why?
  7. Has God recently delivered you from some unpleasant situation? What was it? How did you respond?
  8. Write out a prayer of thanksgiving to God.
