Psalm 6 – A Prayer for Mercy While Under Divine Discipline

Timeless Biblical Truth

When YHWH chastens His covenant children (and using others to do it), and if they are truly repentant, they may pray to be delivered from His discipline.

  1. Petition: Repentant believers, while not denying that they deserved YHWH?’s discipline, can appeal to Him deliverance (1-7).
    1. Repentant believers may pray for divine mercy during prolonged discipline (1-3).
    2. Repentant believers give YHWH reasons for ending His discipline (4-6). By ending His discipline:
      1. YHWH will be faithful to His covenant with them (4).
      2. They will be able to praise Him (5).
      3. They are sincere in their grief due to His discipline (6).
  2. Praise: Repentant believers may express to others their anticipated deliverance from divine discipline (8-10).
    1. Repentant believers can express to others their confidence that YHWH has heard their prayers (8-9).
    2. Repentant believers may be confident that YHWH will discipline those He used to discipline them (10).
