Psalm 60 – “I Am Weak, But Thou Art Strong”

Timeless Biblical Truth.

When in distress, believers may be confident because God’s Word guarantees for them victory.

  1. Anguish: In times of stress, believers may ask God, for deliverance because they belong to Him (1-5).
    1. Believers, during times of stress, may cry out to God for healing (1-3).
    2. Believers confess that God is their protection (4).
    3. Believers may pray for God to deliver them since they are His beloved (5).
  2. Encouragement: God’s Word assures His people of His sovereign protection and rule over their enemies (6-8).
    1. God’s Word guarantees His sovereign preservation and rule of His land (6-7).
    2. God’s Word guarantees the subjugation of the nations, their enemies (8).
  3. Confidence: Believers confess their dependence of God who alone will give them victory over their enemies (9-12).
    1. Believers confess their total dependence on God for help (9-11).
    2. Believers confess their confidence that God will give them victory over their enemies (12).

Questions for Second Milers

  1. Read 2 Samuel 8 for the historical situation that causes David to compose this psalm. What does he see as God’s role in the hard times Israel has seen?
  2. What emotions do the images in this passage reveal about what the people feel (and how deeply) about the things they have experi- enced?
  3. What promises of God does David call to mind? How does he interpret them since God’s promises are not fulfilled at the time he composes this psalm?
  4. To what extent do you believe God is responsible for people’s success or failure in life? In your life? How would you defend your answer using Scripture?
  5. To what extent do you believe God’s help is necessary in your life? 100%? 50%? 20%?
  6. As you review Psalms 56-60, do you see a common theme?
