Psalm 63 – Desiring God

Meditating on the character, presence and provision of God satisfies the believer’s spiritual desires and assures him of his future joy.

  1. A believer’s memory of being in the presence of God increases his desire for God especially when in dire circumstances (1-2).
    1. Believers desire to be in God’s presence when in dire circumstances (1).
    2. A believer’s desire to be in God’s presence increases by remembering when he saw God in His sanctuary (2).
  2. Meditating on God faithfulness, moves believers to praise and obedience (3-8).
    1. Believers are moved to praise God when they remember His faithfulness to His covenant and His character (3-5).
    2. Believers’ praise and meditation of God lead to their obedience (6-8).
  3. Meditation of God’s faithfulness leads believers to praise in anticipation of their vindication over their enemies (9-11).
    1. The enemies of God’s people will be judged (9-10).
    2. The king and those loyal to him will rejoice in God’s salvation (11).

  1. What appears to be David’s circumstances when writing this psalm?
  2. How does his external circumstance affect David’s internal desires?
  3. What causes David, amid severe circumstances, to express his satisfaction. How does thinking affect our outlook on God and life?
  4. Have you ever experienced joy when in painful circumstances by remembering being in the presence of God in a worship service?
  5. What is the future of those who make themselves enemies of God and His people? How does knowledge of their future cause you to respond? With joy? With sadness? With evangelistic fervor?
  6. Give your own title to this psalm.
