Psalm 8 – God Visits Humanity

Feb 23, 2025 | Pastor's Blog, Psalms

Timeless Biblical Truth.

The LORD’s creation is to praise Him because He has revealed His glory, power, and grace by giving weak and mortal humans dominion over His creation.

  1. The LORD’s glory: People need to praise YHWH’S excellent character (1a).
  2. The LORD’s power and grace: People need to confess the Creator’s power and grace (1b-8).
    1. Two aspects of The LORD’s power: The LORD uses the prayers of the weak of His creation to stop the strong [i.e., the wicked] (1b-2).
    2. The LORD’s grace: The LORD graciously gives insignifi-cant humanity the responsibility of having dominion over His creation (3-8).
      1. Humanity’s insignificance: When considering the LORD’s power as seen in the immensity of His creation, humanity seems insignificant (3-4).
      2. Humanity’s significance: The LORD has given humanity dominion over His entire creation (5-8).
  3. The LORD’s glory: People need to praise LORD’s excellent character (9).

This psalm expands on Genesis 1:26-28. While not gods, humanity has significance because the LORD gave them responsibility over His creation. But when praise to Him and their recognition of their accountability to Him is absent, humanity abuses their privilege and power.
