Matthew 3:13-17

The presence of the three Persons of the Trinity is seen: God the Son who is baptized, God the Spirit who descends as a dove upon Him, and God the Father who speaks from heaven. Here we have the manifested presence of Father, Son and Holy Spirit who make this public declaration that Christ’s work is the result of the eternal decrees of all Three. The Trinity spoke at the beginning of creation, “Let us make man” and they speak again now saying, “Let us save man.”

The three Persons of the Godhead are equally concerned to deliver our souls from hell. This thought should cheer us when disquieted and cast down. This should cheer us when we are weary of fighting the world, the flesh, and the devil. We have mighty enemies, but our Friends are mightier. The whole power of the Godhead fights for us.

Here we have a voice from heaven. No such voice speaks before this except at the giving of the law at Sinai. God the Father marks the introduction of both the law and the gospel with His own voice speaking.

His words are a divine declaration that our Lord Jesus Christ is our promised Redeemer sent from eternity past to be our sacrifice and substitute. With Him, God the Father is both satisfied and well pleased; in Him, He regards the demands of His holy law as fully met; through Him, He is willing to receive poor, sinful men to mercy and remember their sins no more.

Let all Christians rest their souls on these words and draw from them daily strength and peace. If we believe in Jesus, God regarded us as united with His own dear Son, with whom He is well pleased. What grace!
