Unbelief Will Make Us Mute

It is always sad to see the effect of unbelief, especially in a good man like Zechariah! But as righteous and holy as he was, the words of the angel appears to him incredible (Luke 1:18).

Such ought not to be. He knew his Old Testament and should have remembered the wonderful births recorded there (Genesis 18:11-14; Genesis 21:1-2; Judges 13:2-3; 1 Samuel 1:5, 19). What God has done once can He not do again? Is anything impossible for Him? But Scripture is often negated by arguments of reason and sense that leaves God out of the equation. Sadly, when reason seems to contradict Scripture, faith becomes mute.

Unbelief is exceedingly sinful in God’s sight! (Luke 1:20) Thus, Zechariah’s doubts and questions brings on him a heavy discipline suited to his offense. His tongue, not yet ready to praise God, is made mute. For maybe nine long months, he is condemned to silence, and daily reminded that by unbelief he had offended God.

Few sins so provoke God as the sin of unbelief. It is a denial of God’s almighty power to do what He says He will do and a slander that His promises are worthless.

We must constantly beware of this soul-ruining sin. Unbelief will rob us of our peace of mind, weaken our hands in the day of battle, and obscure our hopes. Unbelief causes a thousand spiritual diseases. Regarding the forgiveness of our sins and God’s acceptance of our souls, as well as the duties and trials of our daily lives, let us firmly resolve to trust every word of God implicitly, and to watch out for any unbelief in our souls.
