Yes, Lord

Luke 1:34-38
Suggested further reading: Matthew 26:36-42

The angel speaks of the mystery of Christ’s Incarnation in a reverent and discreet manner. We will do well to imitate it. As modesty marks the Scriptural account, so may it mark our meditations about the manner of this holy conception, for speculation moves us near to irreverence. Scripture reveals all that God wants us at present to know. In a religion that comes down from heaven, one must expect mysteries.

The angel further states a mighty principle that nothing will be impossible with God (Luke 1:37). Accepting this truth is of great value for our own inward peace. Among many antidotes to a doubting, questioning mind, few are more useful than a thorough conviction of the almighty power of God. Faith never rests so calmly and peacefully as when it lays its head on the pillow of God’s omnipotence.

Mary’s immediate acceptance of the angel’s message is worthy of imitation (Luke 1:38). She shows great faith, humility, and submission to God. What God will do puts her in a most difficult and painful situation. She will experience a miracle that will be hard to explain and harder still for others to believe. There will be whispers, condescension, ostracism, even condemnation. Yes, there will be great honor in the years to come, but from unbelieving family, friends, and neighbors will come painful words and actions. Accepting the will of the Lord may be painful but believers like Mary, always say, “Yes, Lord.”

Let us seek in our daily practical Christian lives to exercise the same blessed spirit of faith, humility, and submission to God’s will regardless of the cost. May “Yes, Lord” be our life’s motto.
